The Black Starlets of Ghana produced a spirited performance to defeat arch-rivals Nigeria and secure qualification to the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The thrilling encounter, played on Wednesday evening, saw Ghana dominate proceedings with pace, skill, and tactical discipline, leaving their West African neighbors with little room to respond.

From the blast of the whistle, the Starlets looked the more determined side, pressing high and dictating the tempo of the game. Their attacking intent paid off midway through the first half when a swift counterattack was converted clinically to hand Ghana the opener. The goal sent the stadium into raptures as the young Ghanaians seized control of the tie.

Nigeria attempted to claw their way back after the break, but the Black Starlets’ backline stood resolute, repelling every threat with composure. In the latter stages of the match, Ghana doubled their advantage through another well-worked move, effectively sealing the contest and breaking Nigerian hearts.

With this victory, the Black Starlets not only earn bragging rights in one of Africa’s fiercest football rivalries but also secure their ticket to the 2025 U17 AFCON, where they will represent WAFU Zone B. The qualification marks a return to continental competition for Ghana, a nation with a rich history of nurturing football talent at the youth level.

Head coach Dr. Prosper Ogum Nartey hailed the boys’ fighting spirit and discipline, stressing that the journey to the AFCON will demand even greater focus and hard work.

“We came here with one mission — to qualify. The boys showed courage and belief against a tough Nigerian side, and we are proud of this achievement. Now, our focus shifts to preparing well for the AFCON,” he said.

The win is expected to rekindle excitement among Ghanaian football fans, who have long looked to the youth teams as a foundation for rebuilding the nation’s football dominance. For the players, it is both a reward for their resilience and a stepping stone toward fulfilling their dreams of donning the famous Black Stars jersey in the future.

Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth coverage of the Black Starlets’ journey to the U17 AFCON.
